TALL SHIPS - TALL SHIPS

Tall Ships quickly came onto the scene in October 2006 in response to the tall order of opening for the Dirty Projectors at Bennington College. Students seemed to quickly fall in love with the sound, the crisp blend of JJ Beck (drums), Sam Clement (guitar), Maia Friedman (voice), Alex Powell (violin), and Trevor Wilson (voice and piano). Taking songs from Acknowledgements, songs from that summer, and new songs written for the ensemble, the band enjoyed a small following.

'Tall Ships', their self-titled debut, was recorded through the fall of 2006 and that winter, and released in January of 2007 in conjunction with a Northeast tour. There were 200 copies made, all of which are sold out. About 75 of them were the design seen here, but most of them were a second design that featured a few colorful handpainted strips, seen below.

However exciting the project was, it was hard to keep everyone in the same place. For that reason, the band is sort of disjunct, but the energy still exists. You can watch Sam, JJ, Trevor, and guest Ham Poe playing some tracks from Plants and Bodies on a Big Big Radio studio session.
