ADVRB - SENTIMENTAL EDUCATION

Sentimental Education is Andrew's lengthy [62 minutes] attempt at trying out a multitude of styles while retaining his personal recording/songwriting aesthetic. A record split into two distinct 30 minute halves [The first 8 songs are bright, often loud, largely upbeat, spring and summer songs. The second 8 songs are largely quiet, atmospheric, layered, and wintry], it finds Andrew whispering and screaming over a myriad of instrumentation.

Shimmering electric guitar, hammond organ, electric piano, thunderous drums, crisp 1960s drum machine, bells, an old pump organ, a broken upright... It happened in big rooms with echoes.

"Sentimental Education was made between late December 2005 and late June 2006. It was begun at my parents house during the winter holidays, but really took off in January and February at the Department of Safety, in Anacortes, WA. New songs and production happened in the spring (my first time recording at Bennington College, in Vermont) and summer (the experience was bookended by finishing things at my parent's house).

Ryland Bouchard, known for work as the band The Robot Ate Me and as the operator of Swim Slowly Records/Folie Mastering lent his clarinet skill to the last song on the record, and it was the generous lending of his drum machine/guitar amplifiers/electric piano/analog keyboard/toy piano/tambourine that made this album possible.

Everyone living at the Department of Safety and all of the instruments that live there had an enormous effect on the album as well.
Once again, Taylor Kaplan played the drums and trumpet in the summer, in Eugene."
