ADVRB - SLEEP SOUNDLY
Andrew likes to consider 2005's Sleep Soundly as his first full length album. He had made three previous recordings, but it was at the ages of 18 and 19, with Sleep Soundly, that he really found his voice and found all the other sounds. The making of these 10 songs was a meticulously mapped out process, as the lyrics were written and sequenced before a single sound was put to tape.
Andrew also had a very specific sound he was searching for, based largely on what he was iistening to at the time- somewhere between The Songs of Leonard Cohen, Jason Anderson's New England, and Bonnie "Prince" BIlly's Master and Everyone. To capture this autumnal mood and still sound orginal, he did things like recording the churning sound of his grandmother's spinning wheel, clanging candle snuffers together, and mixing tracks like they were ghosts entering and leaving the room.
The songs are all dramatized, exaggerated, dream-like versions of actual stories and feelings.
This recording was made, primarily, during January of 2005 in the attic of my parents’ house. I was surrounded by christmas lights, blackwatch plaid, and wood. Various audio slices were added and subtracted from this bread between then and June, when it started getting “produced.” The ghostly parts on track nine were recorded near the end of the winter, in the Pioneer graveyard. Carey’s piano parts were recorded in the green room of the Robinson Theatre, part of Villard Hall, on the University of Oregon campus. Taylor Kaplan played drums, trumpet, and indian banjo on this album. His parts were recorded either in Carey's old garage or at his mom's house. Meg Graff answered an ad I had posted in the University of Oregon's music department, looking for musicians to help me with this project. She played hammer dulcimer, celtic harp, antique toy piano, and violin. I would go to her house way out in West Eugene to practice and record. She had many cats, and a school bus in her front yard- no explanation. Rose recorded her parts herself, around her house, whenever I wasn't recording- as this was made on her 8-track.
